(March 28, 2025) SCOTTS VALLEY, CA – The Santa Margarita Groundwater Agency (SMGWA) announced today that it has a board vacancy for a Well Owner Alternate Representative, and applications are now being accepted.
SMGWA, formed in 2017 to comply with California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, serves communities in the San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley areas.
Eligible applicants must own, operate, or be served by an individual well, small water system, mutual, or other non-municipal water system within the Santa Margarita Groundwater Basin. The role requires a time commitment of approximately 5 to 10 hours per quarter, including evening meetings. The position is unpaid, and the term is three years.
The ideal candidate will have experience working collaboratively, a strong ability to engage with the community they represent, and relevant knowledge that supports the Agency’s mission and the implementation of the Basin Groundwater Sustainability Plan.

The Santa Margarita Groundwater Agency is a joint powers authority comprised of the San Lorenzo Valley Water District, Scotts Valley Water District and the County of Santa Cruz, to oversee the groundwater management activities in the Santa Margarita Groundwater Basin in Santa Cruz County, California. The Agency was established in 2017. The Board of Directors includes two board members from each of the member agencies, one from the City of Scotts Valley, one from the City of Santa Cruz, one from the Mount Hermon Association Community Water System and two well owner representatives.
